    Opposites Attract Banner-7

Summertime had arrived. In the Northern islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, that meant it was time for some fun! The simple pebbled streets were brought to life by vibrant festival decorations, music, and dancing. The sweet smell of pastries and treats wafted from the bakery. The island's best chefs were out to serve a fantastic array of seafood dishes...and yet, for once, none of the excitement called out to the colony herself. Mari smiled and laughed with her friends and neighbors, lent a helping hand in setting decorations, made sure to cook a few culinary masterpieces of her own...still, no luck. She craved something new, something exciting, something different from her everyday- and she knew just what she was going to do.

Mari's strawberry blonde locks bounced behind her as she ran toward the docks. Due to her plan to ride the colder sea currents southward, she had slipped on a simple sleeveless white dress that fell with a tad of a ruffle to her knees. On her feet were a very plain pair of sandals to match, strapped tightly to her feet to keep her steady during her handling of her small ship. With a bag packed only with essentials, the French girl boarded her vessel. Nothing brought Mari more happiness than the sea. She could be stuck on a ship for the rest of her life and still be happy as ever. It was just the escape she needed.

She raised the sail of her ship in short time, catching the wind within it with little problem. Her cerulean eyes sparkled as the boat began to move, rolling atop the waves in practiced grace. She steered her ship straight and true, riding the currents as she had been taught to do since she was only a child. However, Mari had only been taught the paths of the colder currents. The farther she ventured, the more unfamiliar she was with her location. In time, the warmer currents began to sail her vessel westward from the Atlantic into the Caribbean sea, then more northward toward the Gulf of Mexico.

By then, it had been several days since Mari set sail. Nearing midday, she searched her cabin for something to snack on, only to find she was growing very low on food. "Oh la la! Has it really been this long?" She would have to stop for awhile, rest, and pick up a few things. Maybe, if she was lucky, she would even make a friend or two in the unfamiliar southern lands. She couldn't remember having been any farther south than America's state of Florida, so the drier climate was beginning to take its toll on her. She was used to cool air, rain, and snow. With no one to look out for her, she could very well fall into bad health with all the extra sun she was getting. She was smart enough to protect her fair skin, but her temperature wasn't as easily maintained.

Eventually, the French colony tied her boat at a lonely dock in the port city of Progreso, Yucatán. Looking just around the area she was standing, Mari noticed that the Mexican city wasn't so different from her home. It was nice to know that she wasn't alone in her sea-guided lifestyle. She noticed a few fishermen not too far from her. For a moment, she considered asking them where she could find some supplies for her travels, but then she picked up on their speech: Spanish. Of course. But the little French colony had only learned French and English in her studies, not to mention, her pale skin and strawberry blonde hair made her stick out quite a bit in the local crowd. With a sigh and a brave intake of breath, the girl marched herself down the beach, making a sudden decision to enjoy the moment rather than brood over her situation.

Swiftly slipping off her sandals and leaving them in the sand, Mari ran down to the water, stopping only when the waves began to graze her knees. The gentle pull of the tide felt nice after her days of captivity to the deck of her ship. Enjoying the peaceful scene, she looked out over the horizon, admiring the glimmer of the sun in the water. She appeared as if she couldn't be disturbed, transfixed by the waves before her. Although, with her luck, something was bound to pop out and surprise her. All she had to do was wait.

( That was beautiful :’D Unfortunately I have no pictures so…imaginations!)

Finally, the young and ambitious state could go and see the docks. Since summer began the residents had been busy in the streets with fresh fruits and juices to sell to any coming and going tourists who were interested. Not that it bothered him. In fact, he bought things from them quite frequently and some had memorized his name. But the bustling streets and crowds made the docks seem louder and harder to get to than they usually were.

The Mexican lived in Merida, which was the capitol of the state and a town only thirty minutes away from one of the nearest ports. He walked there with a fishing pole slung over one shoulder, and a bucket over his other. As usual the sun beat down on the already hot gravel, but he was used to it after living so many years as a state of that temperature. Which got him to thinking: What would it feel like if he weren’t used to such temperatures? Obviously one thing would be that he would get sick, the common health problems with unfamiliarity to one’s surroundings. Adaption was something suited for survival, and it was a wonder beyond his thoughts.

But all that wondering led him straight into another person, who immediately started to scold him. He frowned, mumbled his apology, then quickly left the person calling behind him without a word.

And I thought this was a welcoming town...

He shrugged his materials higher onto his shoulder, not bothering to look back and check if anyone was after him.

Aristeo had gotten as far as the ports, but something caught his attention. He stood in his tracts for a while as he pondered over the person with a seemingly strange hair color. She was standing in the calm waves of the clear water. And because of this, her reflection just about shimmered brightly. He was dumbfounded for a moment- never had he seen anyone like her. Of course he was curious about it, so he looked around, set his things down onto the port, and hopped down with a thud.

He carefully walked towards the stranger, but he didn’t look directly at her either. He kept his gaze on the horizon of the ocean, and the light made his eyes appear lighter in color than they already were. His gaze followed up to the girl, but when he was just a few feet away, something made him stop. A chill ran down his spine, telling him that maybe contact with her wasn’t a good idea. He had the quick thought to walk away; there was a sort of colder presence that she had that was new to him. But he wasn’t sure what to do, and he stood frozen in his tracts almost right next to her. He wouldn’t know how confused he looked at the moment.

"It's pretty isn't it, the sea?"

A quiet giggle slipped from the girl as she asked so. She had spotted the boy's reflection in the water several moments ago, but she didn't want to startle him when he seemed to be so curious. She could tell he was native. His appearance and the way he was staring at her made it obvious, however, she didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, it brought a bit of a smile to her face that she had actually been noticed. Being such a small colony, she had been forgotten and overlooked more than once. And it was that thought that had brought her to speak out. She wondered what it was like for the boy beside her. He was a state of nearly two million people, while she held a meager population of almost six thousand. Despite her small size, she found her home a difficulty to manage. There were so many questions she wanted to ask him about his life! But they would have to wait. She wouldn't rush into things. She preferred finding things out slowly through experience.

The French girl turned toward the boy with a pair of shimmering cerulean irises, a few of her long bangs falling in front of her eyes in the process. "It's a lot different though..." She glanced back at the horizon for just a moment. "Where I'm from, the sun is normally much closer to the water at this time of day..." She snapped out of her momentary daze and returned her attention to the boy before her. She extended her hand in a friendly manner, flashing a dazzling smile at him.

"My name is Mari Bonnefoy. It's nice to meet you!"

The teen didn't hear what she said at first, but he then quickly realized the time he was taking to answer. "Uh...Oh, yes." He blinked a few times. "It is something amazing."

His head tilted somewhat when the girl looked towards him with strange but beautiful eyes. No matter how pretty, they were still unfamiliar as if she came from the other side of the world.

She was saying something, something about the ocean. That it was different? Obviously she was already a foreigner to these parts, but it still made him proud that she had marveled at it's natural beauty. He was used to such comments, but that didn't make him appreciate any of them any less. But when this stranger- this intriguing stranger- said it to him, it seemed different all of the sudden.

Wait- her last name was Bonnefoy? That was French, could she be French? She didn't look like it though... Aristeo was reluctant to shake her hand at first, but his hand slowly rose from his side and into a forced welcoming greeting. Her hand was soft, but it wasn't warm like he was hoping to expect from a human. "Nice to meet you too, señorita Bonneyfoy. I'm Aristeo Juarez, but most people call me Teo. By any chance, do you happen to be from Francia?"

Probably not what someone you just met wanted to be asked, but his curiosity got them best of him from the moment. He hated France, but that didn't mean he thought every French person was bad. He had proven that to himself by remembering Canada and his friendly nature- Canada who was kind but uncannily forgotten.

When he asked his question, he noticed her lighter skin and it suddenly occurred to him that the sun could have been bothering her. He wasn't sure about her just yet, but he wasn't one to leave her without a say on the subject. And before Mari could answer, he quickly said, "I'm sorry, but are you alright in the sun like this? It's not that I think you can't handle it, but..." He was going to say that a nation's health could be affected by the wrong kind of weather conditions, but he wasn't sure if she was a personification or a person. "But, uh," He was at a loss for words. His cheeks faintly flushed from the stutters that he couldn't control. Well, she was probably the representation of a colder place because he couldn't remember the last time he was so nervous around anyone for no reason. "I probably sound like an idiot." The state unexpectedly laughed in his throat and smiled honestly. "What I mean to say is that I'm glad you came to visit my little corner of the world. Welcome to Yucatán. Sorry if I didn't recognized another representation such as yourself at first, I haven't really developed the knack like every country has."

It became clear to him that she was a personification all of the sudden- how? Who knew, it was just an instinct that a country had, but it came slower to colonies, states, or even territories for some unknown reason. Either way, it came to all of them.

"Well since your here, would you like to take a look around? Who better to show you the state than the state himself?" He smiled somewhat; the nervousness hadn't completely disappeared, but he was more comfortable when he had that least bit of information from her.

[Just a note. Mari got changed to France's daughter, since he seems to have none yet on this forum XD which is HIGHLY unlikely]

Mari gladly shook Teo's hand, a smile on her face as she began to answer his question. His hand had a warmth to it that she wasn't used to feeling. It had a sort of calm feel to it - another unexpected addition to her day. "Ah, France? Well--" She was stopped by his sudden outburst of concern. She blinked in surprise for a few seconds, a shy blush appearing on her cheeks. It was true, though she had forgotten, she would need to get of the sun for some time. She had gotten a bit too much of it lately. And the fact that he was concerned about such a thing made her feel a little embarrassed. She didn't want to ruin his plans. He probably loved being out in the sun and she didn't want to rob him of the opportunity. Yet, the way he stuttered and his nervous smile made her a little more comfortable, not only because it erased any thought that he might be a threat, but also because she found his reaction kind of...cute. It brought out a slight laugh from her as well.

Her small smile grew into a cheerful grin when he welcomed her once again. He seemed to have the same difficulty as she did in recognizing other representations, so she didn't mind when he admitted to not recognizing her. "No! It's fine really! I can stand the sun for a bit longer. It was a smart thing to ask. Besides, you're not the only one who has trouble with distinguishing other representations. And thank you for the warm welcome! Not everyone I've met is as nice as you've been." Of course, there were still a lot things Mari had left to learn about the state she had just met, but she was quickly growing a liking to him. She had been a bit wary when she arrived, used to conversing with primarily colder regions. However, she had found Teo to be a lot more welcoming and considerate of others than she had imagined. It kept the smile on her face as gladly accepted his request.

"Oui! I'd love that! As long as you don't mind, of course! I don't want to spoil your plans." She glanced over at his fishing materials, a guilty gleam in her eyes. "Fishing is a lot of fun, especially on nice days like this."

( Alright, for a moment there I thought the world was completely out of balance. )

He looked over his shoulder and back at his fishing supplies. ”That may be, but there are many days like this here. And I’ve only found one of you.” He moved to her side and started leading the way away from the beaches. When they reached the dock he picked up the bucket and the rod and held them both in one hand. With the other hand he pointed to the various stands covering the streets. ”That kind of mess happens here every summer. This is a very popular spot for tourist, so naturally it’s a chance for the vendors to get some extra money.”

He had to speak a bit louder to overcome the voices of the growing crowd. All around them there were people buying and selling, looking and questioning, answering and smiling. Most of the items were handmade from anything that could be reused- wood, plastic bags, cloths and silks, and twigs. Even the paints were made with local berries and oils. In any direction there were bright and noticeable colors. After a while people would just not notice it anymore because there was so much constant color, that it grew into a common sight of scenery.

Luckily for Mari there were trees scattered here and there, and it was even better that they were great oaks. Teo led the colony to a stand nearby that sold fruit. He set his things down and picked up a plastic cup and handed it to the girl. ”You have to try this. It’s fruit in strawberry cream. I’m almost sure you’ll love it.” He slipped some coins onto the counter of the woman who sold them and thanked her.

The stands were all close to each other, so it was easy to spot a sombrero; well, it was already easy since the hats were so big in the first place. He picked it off a hook and placed it on Mari’s head and over her eyes with a smile. It seemed unnatural on her and it made him laugh with amusement. “Funny. It’s almost your size.” He tilted it up and out of her eyes with a chuckle. ”These are pretty useful for work outside, but that’s about it.”

Mari's eyes gleamed brightly as she followed the state from the beach, making sure to stop and slip on her sandals in passing. "Only one of me, huh?" She giggled. "That's a new one~"

When they reached the dock, her eyes followed Teo's hand, taking in the sight of all the unique vendors and their goods. Because she wasn't local, she was quite astounded by the liveliness and color that could all exist in one place. Sure her festivals had the same aspects, but never to the extend that just this common area shared. She found it fun and beautiful, nothing like the 'mess' her new companion had described it as. "I don't think it's a mess at all!" She grinned as they made their way through the crowds. "If you're looking for a real mess, you should come visit up north when the first snow comes in. Now, that, is a mess."

She came to a stop under a large patch of shade by the fruit stand, leaning gently against the bark to give herself a break from the sun and excitement. She gratefully accepted the treat he gave her, making sure to thank him and the vendor as well. As she took a bite, she made an almost squeak-like noise, finding the sombrero placed so suddenly over her head and eyes. A blush lit up on her cheeks whilst Teo lifted it, joining him in a good few moments of laughter. "Oh really? If this is almost my size then I must have an abnormally small head!!" She joked, laughing and allowing it to cover her eyes once more before plopping over the state's head in turn. "It fits you much better anyway~"

Grinning, her more playful nature came to light, and with an unexpected challenge, she dashed up into the branches of the tree as if she was a squirrel. "Hey! Teo! Have any experience climbing trees?" She smirked down at him, seated safely one of the higher canopy boughs.

( Next thing you know we’ll have good tasting English food XD )

Teo took off the hat and put it back in it’s place. When he looked back the girl was already up and into a good part of the tree. ”Do I? You bet!” He placed the toes of his shoes firmly on the trunk and lifted himself up. It took as little effort for him as it did for Mari; he had been climbing trees ever since he was a kid. He heaved himself onto a thick branch just a bit higher than the other one that she had settled on. “I used to hide up in the trees all the time when I was smaller to avoid my dad. I don’t think there was a time when he found me.” The memory brought a smile to his face. “I didn’t think of him as a father back then, but I’m glad I do now.”

He looked up at the heavy leaves atop of the trees and spotted a few birds. Or maybe shadows? He squinted and saw that they were a couple of Orange Orioles that were perched, not far away from the two. Teo was going to show them to Mari, but they had flown away almost as fast as when he had turned. He looked after their direction and watched them fly off well into the fog of the hills. He took a step higher onto the tangled branches with caution and looked down at the few wakes of the ships nearby while on his knees.

”Try and come on up here, I want you to see something.” His tone wasn’t challenging, but sympathetic. He wasn’t as confused about her anymore and started putting more faith into the both of them. He felt the strong smelling wood and used it to support his weight when he tried to stand. When he did, he firmly placed his hand on the trunk and stepped to one side to make room for Mari.

[crappy reply is crappy ;A; I apologize. very busy]

Mari smiled when Teo made a positive response to her challenge. She tilted her head to watch him as he climbed higher, listening to what he had to say in the meantime. She was astounded when he mentioned his rough childhood with his father. He seemed like such a sweet person that she couldn't imagine him every struggling with family. But everyone had their secrets...

Mari for instance, had an odd relationship with her father. While he ran her government and kept her safe, he had left her to practically fend for herself. And despite the little attention he seemed to show her, she still devoted her loyalty to him completely. There was no one in the world she felt closer to as of yet.

Her thoughts of her father ceased with Teo's call. It caught her attention instantly. "Alright! I'm coming." She carefully made her way up beside him, making sure to keep her balance as she stood upon the branch.

    _________________________________________________

One other hot day as usual in the country. Marina had been up since the early morning to take care of some matters with the city councils. They were held every now and then to discuss the common issues and concerns of the cities, and ideas were proposed to solve them. The groupings were of decent size, with a certain amount of residents to state their own problems. It was quite tiring for her, considering how often she had to go to the ones scattered across the country. But that was all part of representing a people.

She was dressed in her usual attire, save her hair which was put back in a bun because of the heat. She was carrying a binder containing some important papers from the meetings, so she held them close to her chest. Already on her way to another meeting, she needed to skim through the paperwork to make sure everything was there. She took a deep breath and counted everything, suddenly holding her breath.

Damn it! I can't believe I forgot the same paper again. Maybe they can let it slip this one last time, it's too far to go back and get it now...

The frustrated nation let out an exhausted breath and clutched at the binder. She ran a hand over her neat hair and decided to forget about the situation for the while that she walked. Her worries quickly faded when she got a sniff of something sweet. Summer was the most productive season for the state of Yucatán, and she had almost ignored all of the wonderful stands around. She hurried over to the one loaded with candy and picked some out among the bright colors. It was very easy to see how fond she was of candy and sweets, making her seem almost childish. It reminded her much of her days as Aztec's capitol, but besides that, they were just plain good. She handed the coins to the stand owner, wished him a good day, and went off with the pieces in the pocket on the side of her dress.

Marina looked off to he sides to check for any new coming planes. It was just something she did to occupy herself when there was really nothing else to do. She would be early to the meeting anyway, so why not look around for a while? She admired the unique vegetation and separate wildlife that lived in the particular state. She was proud to have such a beautiful state, just like all the other ones. Even if her son was culturally separated from the rest in a way, he was still part of the family.

As her thoughts trailed off on family, she could have sworn that she saw her son through the thin leaves of the great oak tree. She would have believed it at first since he always climbed them, but she saw long strands of something pink. Marina raised an eyebrow, tilting her head to try and make out what she saw. But she was certain it was Aristeo when she saw the glint of his light eyes through the bushes. He probably wouldn't see her, but she waved a hand in his direction to catch his attention, wondering what or who the other thing or person was.

The state was careful to sit on the branch and overlook the small town. He pointed towards the boats and docks. "It's just beautiful how the boats leave paths that way. It looks like the sea breaks away for them. I can tell you like the sea too." He smiled without looking at her.

Maybe it was the way he grew up by the sea, but there was always something mysterious about it. It was something so vast and unknown, how could one not imagine? Yet because of its vastness, it was also something greater than man himself. Even when one was at their best of talents, the waves would be able to engulf someone within minutes, and sometimes without warning.  It was a startling thought for  some out at sea and out of sight of land, but something completely fascinating for someone with the admiration for it.

He glanced at Mari, then back at the boats, wondering if she had ever had an interest in them. He loved to build and improve ships, and that  brought him to the wonderment if she had the same interest. He wanted to ask, but he settled with watching the people below them. There were so many people, it was almost overwhelming for the young state. He watched them attentively, skimming through the many people. Hazel eyes stopped and noticed a woman waving in their direction. He squinted and saw that it was his mother, no doubt handling business with the council members again. He wasn't sure if she was waving at him, but he wanted for Mari to meet her. Maybe they would share an interest or something that girls talked about. Either way he wanted to see Marina, since she wasn't around too often.

He nudged her and said, "See her right there?" He pointed to  the woman who was waving at them- "She's Mexico. I'm sure she'd like to meet you, and I'd want you to meet her too." He carefully stepped down onto the lower branch and hopped down, helping Mari once she was behind him. He walked then stood at the very edge of the shadow of the tree, waving at Marina to get her attention as well.

    Opposites Attract Banner-7

The colony settled down beside the state with open ears and curious eyes. Her cerulean orbs lit up in a sparkling excitement when she took in the sight of the seaside docks, the boats, and the ocean itself. Teo was absolutely right to assume her liking of it, with only one mishap - Mari didn't just like the sea, she loved it.

Being an island colony, most people would assume that growing up surrounded by the sea was the inspiration for Mari's passion, but in truth, that wasn't it at all. The reason she had fallen so in love with the waves was because of its mystery and unpredictable nature. Life was so monotone and repetitive in the small community she lived that any change at all brought a massive thrill to the population, whether good or bad. Many times the power of the ocean had caused devastation in the small towns of Saint Pierre et Miquelon, but it also provided their source of life and income: fish. They were hopeless without it. The sea was her key to the world and the reason she was sitting so happily beside the Mexican state.

"It is beautiful...absolutely..." She murmured in a stunned sort of state.

From their height, the French girl was able to spot her little white vessel bobbing gently with the waves along an empty stretch of beach. The petite ship was nothing special to look at, but it meant the world to her. The day her father and her friends from the colony had helped her build it was one of the most memorable and happiest memories of her life. It was simple: powered by nothing but the wind and sea. Teo appeared to share that interest for marine transportation, or so she hoped.

She smiled and took a soft hold his hand, moving it so that it pointed at her small white sailboat. "Do you see that ship over there? It might not be as colorful or impressive as those.." She emphasized the other boats he had showed her with a quick glance. "..but it means the world to me. You could come sailing with me sometime, if you'd like."

Soon after, Mari broke out of her wondering spell, called back to reality by the nudge from the boy beside her. Her blue eyes managed to shift through the branches until they found the Mexican woman down below. "She's your mother isn't she?" The colony asked as she carefully followed the state down from the tree. Just as he did, Mari waved to the woman, although a but more shyly.

Marina watched her son climb down, but there was someone else with him. The girl seemed familiar, but she couldn't distinguish her from afar. She fixed her binder in her arms and walked to the waving teens.

"Hola Teo. How are you?" She smiled and ruffled his hair. "And you have a friend with you?" The Mexican turned to the girl and shook her hand in a warm greeting, smiling while she did so. "Very nice to finally meet you. I've heard about you from Franciá." It would have been more welcoming if Marina could lay her hand on the girl's shoulder, but for some reason she couldn't. She had known that the girl would be a little sensitive to the heat.

Marina leaned toward Teo and said softly, "She's very pretty, isn't she?" She gave him a little nudge and glanced back at the colony.

"Why are you both out here? It's too hot today to be out, it would be better if you followed the waves down to the cove." She referred to them both because she didn't want Mari to feel uncomfortable. Both Mexicans could take the heat, but it would be rude to keep a guest out.

Yucatán's coves were some of the loveliest that Marina had ever seen from the country. She had been there various times just to take looks at it. The boulders surrounding the little rivers were perfect to walk across or sit on, and she had always done so when she was a kid. Once she had accidentally slipped and gotten a large cut, but even that couldn't keep her away.

Marina looked up, tapped her chin, then looked back at the teens. "Mind if I come with you?" She hugged her binder and gave them both a hopeful look, although she would have gone anyway.

Aristeo smiled brightly when Mari mentioned the boats. He seemed startled when she suddenly took a hold of his hand, but his attention was diverted to the boats. "Are you kidding? It's lovely. What it looks like doesn't matter, only that it's special to you, right? And..." He said with a smirk on his face, "I'll think about it."

Once they were both down and trying to get Marina's attention, he turned to Mari and nodded his yes to her question. He ran his hand through his hair once Marina greeted him and smiled. "Hola Marina. I'm just fine." He looked at Mari when she was mentioned. "Yeah! I wanted her to meet you, her name is Mari, kinda like yours."

He listened to what she had to say once she leaned in. Her comment made him blush, but he still gave her a look. "I know that already." He covered his face for a moment and looked at her through his fingers. "You don't need to say those kinds of things." He let his arms fall to his sides once the coves were mentioned.

Why hadn't he thought of that before? He excitedly turned to Mari and waved his arms. "Yeah, why don't we go? I promise you'll like it, it's very beautiful." He was going to say 'just like you' because of Marina's words, but he luckily caught his words and smiled slightly  as if nothing happened.

"Are you kidding? Of course you can!" He held Marina's free hand and with his other held one of Mari's. He raised his hands up along with theirs' and laughed. "To the coves!" By now it was obvious how much energy he had, and how easily excited he became.

Mari smiled at Marina's warm greeting, her bright blue orbs nearly glittering when she heard that her father had mentioned her. Often times, she felt as if he forgot she even existed. Even if he had only mentioned her once, it still made her heart swell in respect for the man that raised her. "Merci beaucoup! It's a pleasure to meet you as well Ms. Marina!"

The colony watched in curiosity at the manner in which the Mexican woman whispered to her son. The young girl had sharp ears. After discovering what the woman had said, a blush covered the colony's cheeks. Thankfully she wasn't alone in the embarrassment of the situation. In fact, Teo's flustered reaction caused her to giggle silently in response.

When the coves were mentioned however, Mari left her embarrassed thoughts behind with a cheerful grin. She held onto the state's hand, laughing along with him. She was somewhat surprised by his excitement at Marina's suggestion, but nevertheless, everything she had seen so far had been fantastic. The girl could barely imagine what his famous coves would be like.

    "Oui! To the coves!"

Her white dress was a strong reflection of her purely gleeful nature at the French child hurried along with the two Mexicans, her brilliant smile never fading. The extensive energy of the southern land was a perfect mix for the calmness and simplicity Mari usually had. Teo had brought out the playful being that had been frozen inside of her for so long. It made her wonder again...if visiting her home would effect the boy in a similar manner. She stared at him for a second or two before shaking the thought from her head. Rather than her culture changing his, she concluded that his culture and liveliness would more than likely make a positive impact on hers. One day, she promised she would return his hospitable favor. He was showing her so many wonderful things. Maybe, in time, she could give him the same experience.

Marina smiled brightly and laughed along with both of them. Teo was rarely this open about his thoughts, in fact, it was one of the few times that he seemed so happy. He was usually so calm and quiet that it made her worry, sometimes even question him. Nevertheless she was glad to see him in such a state.

She carried her binder under one arm and walked with the teens through the stands. They went along the waves, and while they did Marina looked out to the horizon. She took a deep breath of the refreshing air, closing her eyes momentarily to take it all in. The wind was much cooler near the beach, and especially compared to the hot winds that centered in the country. She wondered what it would it be like in a cold country. Not just chilly, but somewhere where snow and sleet was an ordinary experience.

Living in a warmer temperature, it was only natural to wonder what a different world the cold was. It could get pretty cold at nights in Mexico, but surely nothing compared to the extreme North and South. Marina had once visited Canada because of political matters, and she saw something that remained in her memory. Canada had said they were 'northern lights' and they had fascinated her. She had been to different countries just like many other nations, but that wasn't enough to satisfy the voice that told her she wanted to see it again. There was something so lovely about it that she wouldn't be able to leave the thought alone.

Mari represented a colder part of the world, and the girl herself was already a wonder to Marina. Her dark eyes lit up once she saw her light pink hair, being more of a surprise than a worry.

Marina carefully let go of Teo's hand and pointed to the bold rocks ahead of them. "What do you know? There it is!" She ran to the side of a boulder and kept her papers safe and hidden under a dry patch along with her sandals. Some thick trees covered most of the rivers' paths, and they gave a luring aroma of bark. She climbed up and onto one of the boulders and swung her legs over the edge. "Beautiful! You both have to come on up here, just leave your shoes under this boulder." She tapped the boulder she was sitting on then stood up on it. The others would follow behind, so she walked on in deeper into the streams. The water flowed gently, but it was still enough for life to blossom in its the hollows of rock. Once in it, anyone could feel the small fish glide past them. The water was clear enough to see through, so one could see the pebbled ground.

( Dudes, so sorry for the late and crappy reply School is back in. )

Teo followed Marina along the shores. She seemed to be in deep thought, so he didn't bother to break the thoughts. He instead busied himself with kicking small amounts of sand up. Some of it got into his shoes, but they were an old pair so it didn't matter much.

When they got there he slipped his shoes off and placed them under the boulder alongside Marina's. He thought he saw something move, so he settled to a side to take a better look. It was only a small shore crab, it was harmless. He picked up the shy animal by the back of the shell and lifted it off the boulder. Its legs were sandy, but it was a radiant red color. He held onto it as he followed Marina over the boulders. With his head, he motioned for Mari to follow them.

"It's looking charming so far, isn't it?" He smiled as he looked at her then to the flowing stream. This time it wasn't said by pride, but by a small thought that he wanted to show her how truly lovely the place was.

Mari followed the two Mexicans along quietly, taking in the beautiful scenery along the shores as she did so. When Marina finally pointed out the boulders, the girl was eager to dash over after the two, leaving her shoes where instructed. She was perplexed by the little crab, giggling at the sight of it.

Climbing over the boulders with Teo, Mari flashed another smile. "Oui! It's very charming! And much quieter than up in town as well! It reminds me of home a bit.." She thought back to all the little streams and pebble banked creeks throughout her colony's land. The inhabitants often journeyed there during the summer to fish, camp, or just have a restful time. The shade provided by the trees provided a cooler atmosphere in addition, restoring some of the girl's energy that had been taken by the heat.

Coming up beside the state, Mari studied the crab in a playful manner, stroking its shell carefully. "He's cute~ Are there a lot of them around here?"

You kiddos too? I start tomorrow. This might be the last good post until a while.

Marina glanced over her shoulder to the teens. They were both looking at something, so she turned to see what it was. She lifted her dress a bit so it wouldn't skim the river then let it fall once again to her ankles. She saw the tiny animal in his hands and smoothed two fingers over its back.

"Yes, but you don't see them here on shore often," she answered Mari. "They're usually found between the rocks in the waters, but it looks like this one came out. It's a pretty bright color too, I've seen a lot of those here."

Just as that was said, she saw something slowly move up to the side of the boulder. It wasn't exactly as small as Teo's but it was still pretty dingy in size. She picked it up and examined it as well. [color=violet]"Odd, here's another one."/color] She placed it back down and motioned for Mari and Teo to follow her.

They moved in deeper through the thick trees, along the graveled river. There was enough footing for people to walk by, but they would still need to be careful in order not to fall right in. And if you stepped in a place for too long then you wouldn't notice yourself sinking into mush. The feeling was cool on your feet-especially in the sun- but it would be hard to get out.

The nation stopped under a great oak and took a moment to scan the scenery before her. The trees in the distance seemed to spread out forever, sadly it wasn't so. The fresh pine scent was faint, barely noticeable with the constant breeze. Luckily the air was fresh, but the chances of that were much more likely in the state that seemed to be florid with plants. It was one of the few places in Mexico that wasn't dried and hot most of the time.

She turned to the others. "Well that's all I wanted to do, honestly. How about you Mari? You came for a reason right? Was there something you wanted to see?"

"Of home? What's that like?" Her home must of been much different from his, overlooking the obvious reasons. How would it be to wake up to a cold morning? Or maybe it wasn't even cold, maybe Mari's little part of the world was just as fresh as the forests. How nice it would be to spend a day without the harshness of a sun.

Teo smiled when Mari asked her question and Marina answered. He nodded. "Yes, just like miss know-it-all just said. This little guy must of come up on shore for a reason." Marina had picked up another one, and he looked at it uncertainly then shrugged. "Yeah, you don't see them come up too often. That's pretty cool."

He followed Marina along the dirt ground with the small creature still in his hands. He suddenly got the idea to put it on his head, which he did without thinking. "Hey look, crab hat!" He laughed a bit then lowered it from his height. He left it on the ground then gave it a little shove to give it reassurance that it could leave. He hoped they would see some more animals, since he loved to observe their behavior. By the time he looked back at the ground, the animal was already out of his sight,

As Marina stood under the oak, he stood next to Mari on unconscious instinct. His expression was bright when Mari was asked about her intentions on the visit. "Yeah, what did you come to see? I mean, people haven't visited this country like before." A sullen note came over his tone; he hadn't meant to bring up the situation of people that came and went. "I mean, even if this is the safest state at the moment, it's not like before. Some of the other states have already been corrupted, but I owe my appreciation to the police here. Most of them have found ways to use their power against others, but it's much different here."

After a slight pause he cleared his throat and fixed his fleece collar. "Other than that the people are good here. Some of them have been driven to desperation, but in the end we're all people. Anyone getting hungry?" There was a sudden need to change the subject, so food was the first thing to pop up into his mind. He pointed upwards towards the underlings of retreating flowers. They were very strange flowers, almost looking like an eyeball. "Who likes Maracuya? Or, it's also called passion fruit."

"My home...it isn't much really." Mari sighed. "But...it is very beautiful. Outside of the town, it's mostly rocky hills covered in a carpet of grass, but they provide a beautiful view over the sea and town wherever you are. Seals like to hang out on the rocks at the shoreline. You see them from time to time if you look close enough. Then, if you venture even farther from town, there are some small forests. There is one place...that reminds me very much of here. The banks are mostly grassy, but you still get little islands of pebbles as well. There's a river and on either side it's lined by a thick stretch of pine trees! If you climb them, you can see for miles! However, even in the summer, it never gets very warm, especially when the wind blows through. I always bring a scarf with me just in case. Arctic winds can be brutal even on the warmest of days." Mari blushed when she noticed how long she had been rambling, glad Marina had changed the subject by answering her question.

She could only continue with a laugh as Teo put on his 'crab hat', and watched as the little creature crawled away. She looked at both of the Mexican's for a few seconds before replying to their new inquiry. "Well...to be honest, I came down here to escape from my home. My father doesn't visit very often and Canada is always busy...it's hard when you never get to have fun with anyone new. We get tourists on our island, but a very small number of them, and they never stay long. Most people prefer places like this with a lot of warm sun and tropical beauty. I guess...I wanted to see it for myself." She smiled.

She would have assured the state that she didn't see how anyone could resist a home as nice as his, but by the way he quickly switched gears to the fruit above them, she decided it better to refrain from doing so. "Passion fruit? I might have heard of it but I've never tried it before..."
